2010-2011 Doug and Grace Laughlin Scholarship Winner: Courtney Hargis

Courtney Hargis was raised in the small town of Mooreland, Oklahoma and is now a senior in Oklahoma State University, majoring in Early Childhood Education.

Courtney has been involved in a plethora of leadership and community activities since a young age. Some of her leadership activities include positions in National Women’s Fraternity, Student Alumni Board, OSU President's Posse, Freshman Representative Council, President’s Leadership Council and HES Student Council- Student Faulty Chair. And Courtney’s leadership work has clearly affected the lives of many:

The most fulfilling activity was helping to raise over 10,000 dollars to send a young terminally ill child to meet her grandparents in Japan through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.”

Whether she is teaching Kindergarten students  how to read during her field experiences, giving campus tours, or helping with prestigious events for the President of Oklahoma State University and dignitaries, Courtney strives to be an unique human being.

I attribute much of my ambition to my parents.  Their positive guidance has influenced me to become a woman with high morals standards and unquestionable character.”

Courtney found a welcoming environment in Oklahoma State University (OSU) and her OSU experience has taught her how to balance rigorous academics with many extracurricular and community activities.

From being named a Top 10 Freshman Woman to being honored as a Homecoming Queen Finalist and Senior of Significance, my OSU career has been far more than I could have ever imagined.”

Courtney has worked to save money for education since she was fourteen years old. While working, she still maintained excellent grades in high school and graduated with honors.  Attending a Division I university has put a financial burden on Courtney and her family. Although she has been very fortunate to have earned scholarships to help pay for some of her college education in the past, as a senior, most of those scholarships have expired.

The College Parents of America Scholarship will help with my financial burden as I complete my college education at Oklahoma State University. It is with genuine gratitude that I extend my thanks to this wonderful organization.”

Courtney’s goal is to teach Kindergarten students after she receives her B.S. in Early Childhood Education.  She also wishes to pursue her Masters in School Counseling.

“I hope my positive influence and love for education will prepare my students to be lifelong learners.”
