2010-2011 Doug and Grace Laughlin Scholarship Winner: Evelyn Sanchez
Throughout her high school career in Los Angeles, Evelyn Sanchez dedicated herself to a rigorous academic schedule. Evelyn was on her school’s honor roll for four years, took multiple AP courses, and graduated in 2010 with honors for achieving greater than a 4.0 GPA. She graduated as salutatorian of 601 graduating seniors.

While in school, Evelyn also kept a busy work schedule, but her work certainly wasn’t considered a stereotypical high school job. Evelyn worked part-time in the medical genetics program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she “shadows” the physicians as they perform their duties.
However, her rigorous academic and work schedules were balanced with a community-minded volunteer work. Throughout ninth grade, Evelyn volunteered in the Literacy Arts Culture Education Recreation (LACER) program tutoring middle school students in math. From tenth to twelfth grade, she served as a member of Girls Inc., a nonprofit organization that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through a network of local organizations in the United States and Canada. Some of other her volunteer work included working for Volunteers of America and helping out battered women in shelters.
A freshman at Brown University, Evelyn is the first in her family to attend college. She is studying Biology as part of an 8- year program that will include 4 years of medical school. In line with her part-time high school work as well as her membership in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), she intends to become a doctor with a specialty in medical genetics. Clearly, this specialty will allow her to continue to balance her commitment to both demanding work and community care.
“I wish to become a clinical geneticist and help out children and adults born with birth defects or genetic disorders.”
