2010-2011 Doug and Grace Laughlin Scholarship Winner: Vincent Kalkofen

Vincent Kalkofen, from Weslaco, Texas, has deep affection for his family and great aspirations for his future.

“My family is my foundation; it gives me purpose, direction, and encouragement.” Vincent says.

Vincent was born into a Hispanic American Family who believe in working hard, getting an education, and serving the community.  Vincent’s grandfather worked towards the future establishment of civil rights in the 1970s. His grandmother, who was in an orphanage as a child, achieved a successful career. While she raised him, Vincent’s mother was a single mother, who worked a full-time job and managed to attend college during the evenings.

Influenced by his family values, Vincent took a leadership role from a young age. As an older sibling in his family, he helped take care of his sister. This was especially true after his parents’ divorce when he was 13 years old. “All of a sudden, I was the man of the house.  I helped around the house whenever I could. After I was able to drive, I assisted even more.”

At his high school, Vincent served as President of the Student Council and also was a member of various leadership organizations. Outside school, Vincent has served as a leader in Alateen, a world-wide support group.  The program Alateen is the sister program of Alanon, and its purpose is to help teenagers who are affected by alcoholics in their home. As an Alateen Group Representative, Vincent spoke at conferences all over Texas to bring a message of hope to families impacted by alcoholism.

Vincent also demonstrated his excellence in academics. He excelled in his classes and participated in various academic programs such as University Interscholastic League (UIL).  While in 11th grade, Vincent was selected to be part of the Dual Enrollment Engineering Academy, a program where high school students attend college classes at the same time.  “That was the most enjoyable time of my education because I finally felt challenged by the college curriculum.”  This fall, Vincent will attend the University of Texas – Austin as a freshman studying in the School of Communications.

“Since I was young I remember my mother quoting to me Dr. Martin Luther King, ‘Everyone has the power for greatness, not for fame, but greatness because greatness is determined by service.’ Getting a college education is my way of continuing my service work and obtaining this scholarship award will enable me to fulfill my education aspirations. ”
