2011-2012 Doug and Grace Loughlin Scholarship Winner: Chelsea Williams

Chelsea is a junior majoring in Sociology and minoring in Statistics at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. She intends to enroll in graduate school to advance her education in statistics. Chelsea will be the first person in her family to graduate from college and attend graduate school.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany to Army servicemen, Chelsea Williams was bound to live a life of travel and adventure with her parents. The unfortunate death of her mother and subsequent passing of her father resulted in nine-year old Chelsea living with her grandmother, aunt, brother, and two younger cousins in Sarasota, FL.
In high school, she held leadership positions on campus, was a part of the Honor Society, and played clarinet in a Visual Performing Arts program. Interested in residential areas’ impact on social mobility, she has interned at the Section 8 Department of her local housing authority for the last two summers and taught nutrition classes at her community kitchen from 2001 until 2006.
Chelsea has completed an Urban Education fellowship in New York City. She was a research assistant, a manager of her college’s Campus Center, and is the Five-College Representative to other campus groups for the Black Students’ Alliance. Currently, she is studying abroad in Manchester, England. This summer, she will be attending the Explorations in Statistics Research program held at U.C. Berkeley and will return home to volunteer in her community. Chelsea wants to give back to the numerous mentors that have inspired her to persevere.
