2011-2012 Doug and Grace Loughlin Scholarship Winner: Gloria Mejia-Cuellar

Gloria Jaqueline Mejia-Cuellar is a senior at Media Academy in Oakland, California and will attend Yale University this fall. She is a successful journalist, policy debater, and graphic designer. Mejia-Cuellar has a drive for community service and volunteered her time at 826 Valencia, a youth writing center in San Francisco, where she held writing workshops and tutored children after-school. Mejia-Cuellar won 3rd place Feature Story at the Northern California Press Women 2010 High School Journalism Contest and an Honorable Mention in Editorial Writing at the National Write-Off competition 2011. During her junior year, Mejia-Cuellar interned at the Oakland Tribune as part of the Life In Perspective Board. Mejia-Cuellar is currently Multimedia Editor for Media Academy’s student newspaper, the Green & Gold.
Mejia-Cuellar is the captain of the policy debate team at Fremont Federation of High Schools. She and her twin sister, Kimberly, were 1st place varsity team for the Bay Area Urban Debate League’s season opener 2011 and were the first all women team from their league to be sent to Urban Debate League Nations this year. At Nationals the Mejia-Cuellars won 5th place team. Mejia-Cuellar hopes to major in Political Science and utilize her skills to help her low-income community.
