Thank Congress for Reinstating Tuition Tax Deduction
Before shutting down its work for the holidays, the U.S. Congress finally approved one of College Parents of America’s priority items - the reinstatement of what was an expired ability for families to deduct at least a portion of their higher-education-related expenses. Unfortunately, rather than make this provision a permanent part of the tax code, the Congress only extended it through the end of 2007. Nevertheless, current and future college parents should be thankful that members of the U.S. House and Senate recognized the importance of tuition tax deductibility as one of the three legs of the stool through which families are struggling to meet ever-increasing college costs. Please click here to write a thank-you note to Congress that will reside in the College Costs section of this blog. As part of your message, be sure to include your college cost priorities for the new Congress. Let your voice be heard in the Nation’s Capital and read by your fellow parents across the country.

As we are squeezed from left and right, and struggle to pay our son’s first year tuition, we feel a slight relief with this tax credit, any bit helps. Hope it continues. Thank You.

Thank you for reinstituting the Tuition Tax Credit. As a 58-year-old single parent with 2 kiddos in college and no help from their father, we feel like we are withering on the vine and will still come out without a college degree. I have also been pursuing my nursing degree since 1974 and hope to finish it within the next 1 to 1-1/2 years. The Tuition Tax Credit will be a huge help this year. I agree with an earlier comment about the cost of living going up and the cost of tuition going up…and would like to add, not everyone gets even a cost of living raise. I am an LVN (nurse) and our last COL raise was $.05/hour, which would mean be $.40/day or $2.00/wk or $104/year! Jokingly, this would amount to about .0000573944 % yearly income. I don’t know about the rest of you, but the cost of food, gas, utilities, and housing have risen at a much faster and higher rate. In my lower income situation, I am happy for anything that will help, except that life is extremely difficult when you have no clue whether you will be able to let your kiddo go back to scool next semester, or have them stay out a semester and work to help me get back on my feet after spending more money than I can hope to have on daughter’s college. Long story short, THANK YOU! for helping us again this year, and keep it coming - at least until I can get my degree. I refuse to die without a college degree (I am 58), leaving my children the only ones in the family with college education and college degrees.

YOU DID SOMETHING THAT IS GOOD TO ALLOW THE TUITION TAX DEDUCTION. I MUST SAY THANK YOU.
January 31st, 2007 at 1:33 am
Thank you for bringing back the tuition tax deduction. This tax deduction helps
college students achieve their dreams and gives the parents some form of relief and assistance with rising costs. Thanks again for your support.

My son is “college hunting” for next year. “OUCH” is all I can say. PLEASE continue finding ways to help me say “we can do that!” to the college he has worked so hard to get into.
January 23rd, 2007 at 8:25 pm
As a parent of a first time college it is really great to know that you care. Every bit, not matter how great or small is truly a blessing. Thanks.
January 22nd, 2007 at 6:41 pm
As the parent of a college student, thank you for extending this credit. Every little bit helps.

If you are trying to get money for college for your son or daughter, I’d direct them to this new “ethics essay” contest that Junior Achievement is doing for a $5K scholarship. Here’s more info if you are interested http://studentcenter.ja.org/aspx/LearnEthics/ethics_essay_rules.aspx.

This is a simple Thank you for extending this tax credit. This is a decision that you can take credit in making life just a little bit easier for single parents.
January 16th, 2007 at 7:54 am
I would like to thank you for extending this tax credit. It is extremely hard for “middle class” Amercians to meet the expenses of college. Please take into consideration that although we are considered “middle class” our take home pay is often that of what would be considered “poor”.
January 15th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
Thank you for reinstating the tuition tax credit, I hope they consider making this credit permanent. As immigrants we struggled to reach the “middle income family status”. Now we find ourselves struggling again, but this time is to pay for the cost of college for our daughter. We, as many middle income families do not qualify for financial aid except for loans this tax break is a step in the right direction to help families struggling with the increasing cost of tuition.
January 13th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Thank you so much for getting this going in the right direction. I’m hopeful that more will be done in the future to help the youth of our country afford a higher education. This is not the area to cutback on the tax brakes. In fact, there should be much more offered and not only to those that qualify for the absurd FAFSA requirements.
January 10th, 2007 at 2:34 pm
Outstanding.I have enrolled my son in a prepaid college program for a year now & this is truly wonderful news. Now,lets make it permanent,as our children are the most valuable resources we have & the future depends on these fine, young kids.

I applaud the members of Congress who voted to re-instate the tuition tax credit. As a parent of two college students and a third who will enter next year I know first hand the overwhelming financial burden college costs are to families. I took a second job working nights and weekends trying to make extra money for my children’s education. My reward? Being placed in a higher tax bracket and owing more money in taxes that I wanted to use for tuition. This is also detrimental on my FAFSA application. With a higher income, I am expected to contribute more and have a harder time qualifying for aid. This punishment of hard work seems opposite to all I’ve believed about the American Way. Please consider extending this credit to help our families help their kids. America’s future depends on well educated citizens to compete in the global job market.
January 9th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
I thank you for reinstating the Tuition Tax Deduction. As parents of three children, the eldest of whom is currently a freshman in college, I encourage you to make this a permanent part of the tax code. We qualified ONLY for student and parent loans. We understand the importance of higher education, but the expense is overwhelming. Thanks for helping us with this break!
January 8th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Thank you for extending the tuition tax deduction. With 5 students in college, though, the deduction is way too limited. Giving our children a quality college education should yield a higher tax base in the future. Congress should be encouraging everyone to attend college by giving tax breaks for the parents now. The investment will pay for itself in the future.
January 8th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
Thank you so much for reinstating the college tuition tax credti. Our daughter Kelly is the first in our family to go away to college, and things like this help make it possible. She is the first of our 4 children to attend college, and we surely nedd all the help we can get.
Again, thank you so much.
January 8th, 2007 at 11:54 am
Thank you for extending/reinstating the tax offset for college tuition; every little bit helps as college costs continue to rise. Tuition is high, but there are many other costs incurred to receive a higher education. I hope you would consider incuding the other college costs as a tax relief to help offset the total high costs. The USA has been falling behind other countries in education; tax relief is one way to help us as a country to move forward. After all, the costs of finding, securing, and moving to a new job is tax deductable; why not the entire cost of receiving education at a higher level to become hireable?
January 8th, 2007 at 11:43 am
Thanks. I have two daughters currently in college.
January 8th, 2007 at 9:54 am
THANK YOU..
January 8th, 2007 at 9:41 am
Thank you very much for reinstating the College Tuition tax credit. Over the last two years tution has gone up between 7% and 15%, this year they are saying 7% again. Every little bit helps. Please keep this tax break, maybe even raise the amount. Let’s keep the knowledge at home in the USA.
January 8th, 2007 at 7:42 am
As the parent of a college sophomore, THANKS!
January 4th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Many thanks for reinstating the tuition tax credit. All help is needed to give our children the education they need, not only for the good of their own future, but also to secure a strong economic future for our country.
Please extend this break beyond 2007. We’re all struggling with the enormous cost of tuition, and we need all the help we can get.
Many thanks again.
January 3rd, 2007 at 11:14 pm
Thanks for reinstating the tuition tax credit. I will be a major help in sending our son to college over the next year. I hope you plan to extend the credit for future years as well.
January 3rd, 2007 at 1:05 pm
Thank you for reinstating the Tuition Tax Deduction. We need all the help we can get to put our children through college and give them greater opportunity to understand themselves better and be successful and contribute to the world.
January 2nd, 2007 at 1:34 pm
To all members of Congress that voted to reinstate the Tuition Tax Deduction, my family and I thank you. This is such an important benefit for families to make college a reality for their children.
PLEASE consider having it extended out further than 2007 as it now stands. Without doing that, it is a temporary fix for an ever increasing problem of allowing kids in America to receive the education they need to compete in the global economy with the rest of the world’s children. OUR FUTURE NEEDS THIS !!
January 2nd, 2007 at 12:12 pm
Thank you for reinstating the college tuition tax deduction through 2007. Parents nowadays want the best for their children and the government’s support is the best way. I am sure all of congress and senate want to send their children to the best schools and the rising costs of college education are mindblowing to everyone in the US.
Please renew for 2008 and beyond as the costs will only go higher and we all deserve a break for wanting the best for our families.
January 2nd, 2007 at 11:26 am
I thank you for reinstating the Tution Tax Deduction. As the mother of four children, the eldest of whom is currently in college, I encourage you to make this a permanent part of the tax code. Our children cannot compete in today’s global marketplace without the training and credentials that college provides. America can not afford to fail this generation or they will fail us in the future.
Let’s make 2007 the year we make education a priority in this country!
Thank you.

Like many others I would like to thank you for reinstating the tuition tax deduction for parents with children in college. It helps so much when you’re trying to save for your retirement and put your child through college. So they can become productive members of society. It’s been a struggle and any relief is greatly appreciated.
December 28th, 2006 at 10:15 am
I wish to thank Congress for continuing the tuition tax credit. Now I hope I won’t have to choose between my son who is going to college next year and my mother who is retired and receives very little in social security. I know I at least have a small chance to help them both.
December 27th, 2006 at 3:22 pm
While college expenses are just starting I’m extremely thankful that I’m able to deduct any and all amounts related to educating my children. Nearly 10 years ago my husband passed away leaving me with 3 small children to raise. While I’ve been one of the lucky ones and able to provide for my children (things beyond the minimum) I’ve done so by minimizing saving for college. Making this a permanent deduction would help those of us with college expenses now and ensure that those with younger children have the ability to take advantage of these benefits in the future.
December 27th, 2006 at 1:07 pm
Thank you for reinstating the tuition tax credit. It will certainly help! Especially since we have more than one child to put through school.
December 27th, 2006 at 10:14 am
Thank you for reinstating the tutition tax deduction. With a first time college student it will be very appreciated by those of us who are willing to help our kids attend college and would like to see them not be buried with a mountain of debt. It would nice to see some permanent deductions added also to help.
December 26th, 2006 at 8:56 pm
The reinstatement of the deduction for at least a portion of college tuition is a step in the right direction. The country needs to see college expenses not as an expense but rather as an investment in the country’s tax base. Although tax revenues are lessened in the short term by this action, the long term benefits are an enhanced tax base by the addition of more people earning higher wages (due to their higher levels of education made possible by these tax credits) and therefore able to pay higher taxes for the rest of their lives. The lowered tax revenues now will more than be made up for in the long term.
December 26th, 2006 at 4:43 pm
Thank you so much for reinstating the tuition tax deduction for parents with children in college. It helps so much when you’re a middle class American trying to save for your retirement, and put your child through college so they can achieve their goals in life.
December 18th, 2006 at 6:52 pm
Thank you for the reinstatement of the deductibility of at least part of the tuition for college but please extend this as a permanent part of the tax code. My son is a freshman and at this time the only aid we are receiving is parent loans and the small student loan he is entitled to. We have drained most of our savings accounts to pay for his first year. The deduction is wonderful for us middle income families who don’t qualify for any other financial aid than loans.
December 18th, 2006 at 3:37 pm
Thank you for continuing the tuition tax deduction for parents of children in college. We hope that Congress will see the value of continuing to provide some relief to parents struggling to meet the costs of higher education for their children. This deduction is sincerely appreciated.
December 18th, 2006 at 2:09 pm
As parents of two college children we thank you for the reinstatement of the deductibility of at least part of the tuition we pay. Please make this a permanent part of the tax code - We really need it and with so few other deductions this means a lot. Thank you.
December 18th, 2006 at 1:38 pm
Thank you for the support you have given to the future of America. I have a husband in graduate school and a son entering college in fall of 2007.
December 16th, 2006 at 2:14 pm
Thank you ever so much for showing us that the future of our country depends on our young people and the knowledge they need to succeed. By provided support for families with college students is one of the ways to ensure the future of this great country.
December 13th, 2006 at 5:40 pm
Thank you so very much for reinstating the tuition tax deduction for parents with children in college or for those adults who are struggling to better themselves by attending college. Please continue to support families in this manner as college costs soar along with everything else. Any relief is certainly appreciated. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
December 12th, 2006 at 10:33 am
Thank you so much for reinstating the tuition tax deduction for parents with children in college. It helps so much when you’re a middle class American trying to save for your retirement, putting your child through college so they can achieve their goals in life and attempting to financially assist your parents who can’t make ends meet with Social Security. It’s been a struggle and any relief is greatly appreciated.
