Our experience last year was totally baffling. My daughter, who graduated in the top 10 of her class, applied to several top tier schools, Amherst being one of them. I recalled reading that last year's senior class nationwide was the largest in more than a decade, and getting in was going to be tough. To our great surprise, she was waitlisted at several of the colleges, and admitted to Amherst! She never had very high hopes of getting in there since the school is so small and so selective. It just goes to show you that you can't ever really tell what will happen with college admissions. And by the way, their financial aid package was superb...it wound up costing about $1,000 more to send her to Amherst than it did to send her to the best state school.
