From Where Does a College's Freshman Class Come?

September 12, 2013

The US Department of Education biennially completes a survey of the migration of new college freshmen to various universities and colleges throughout the country. The result? Quality information presented in data tables.

However, in a visualization from the Chronicle of Higher Education, you can see an interactive map showing this data in easily consumable form. With this display, understanding from where a freshman class comes has never been easier.

The display has two key functions:

  • state migration map visualization, separated by school (seen above)
  • bar chart visualization detailing overall freshmen migration into each state

You can see the graphic over on the Chronicle of Higher Education's website. As schools increase their cross-country recruiting efforts, it's fascinating to see just how many students go to school out of state and, often, far away from their hometowns.
