If your child is involved in an accident, the average amount of time it will take for you to be notified to provide urgent medical information or to make critical care decisions is 5.85 hours. This is why College Parents of America is pleased to partner with Alert Notification, a national 24-hour immediate notification provider.
Alert Notification can reduce the average time needed to notify you of your child’s condition from almost 6 hours to about 10 minutes.
This nationwide emergency notification membership service expedites contact between emergency personnel and designated family and friends. Members provide up to five contacts with multiple contact numbers (home, work, cell and etc.), and in turn receive with decals and cards that state and local emergency officials recognize and use to contact a central Alert Response Center. Alert Notification personnel then call every name and number in the member’s file until contact is made and that person is directed to the emergency facility where the member is being treated.
Colleges and Universities, and FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is often interpreted to prohibit personnel at colleges and universities from distributing any information about a student over the age of 18 without the written permission of that student. This includes emergency information. Alert Notification supplies a mechanism that enables the student’s family to be contacted in the event of an emergency, thereby releasing the college and university from this legal and ethical challenge.
When your child is away from home – no matter how near or far – it’s comforting to know that you can be reached in a matter of moments, if necessary.
