Lastly, not everything that is called a scholarship is a scholarship. In the case of colleges and universities, scholarships that are not awarded on particular criteria or achievements are in reality just another name for a discount.  Therefore it is vital to evaluate and compare the accurate "net cost" of the schools that your student may attend. Although it is difficult to refuse a $10,000 scholarship from a $30,000 tuition college, the scholarship award should be evaluated in the context of the net cost to your family.
