RENTERS INSURANCE

Protecting Your Student's Belongings with Renters Insurance

If you've ever experienced college move-in day, you know that students have a lot of stuff. Keep your student's belongings safer with the help of renters insurance.

Renters insurance typically has a low deductible ($100) and includes protection for personal liability and property. Be certain to consider a policy that includes liability protection plus property coverage. With an average cost of $160 per year or less (with $50,000 of liability coverage), it may be worth the potential savings.

Student Protection Checklist:

  • Inventory all personal property by photographing each item (saving these items with receipts can make it easier to benefit from warranty protection or to replace them due to theft).
  • Evaluate your homeowners insurance policy to determine coverage requirements for college students, if any, and determine its potential value given your deductible level.
  • Determine the total value of all personal property and determine the right amount of renters insurance you may need to replace items in case of theft or unintentional damage.
  • Choose a low deductible renters insurance policy with flexible coverage levels.
  • More than 30,000 burglaries related to college students are reported annually, including 15,000 residence hall burglaries. According to statistics on http://OPE.ED.gov/Security.
  • Each year, fire departments respond to more than 3,800 fires in dormitories, fraternities, sororities and barracks. www.nfpa.org
  • One study suggests that a four-year student bicyclist has a 53 percent chance of losing a bike to theft. www.NationalBikeRegistry.com
